Skoda Auto India has unveiled its most anticipated SUV, the Kylaq, marking its debut in India and worldwide. The Kylaq signifies a new chapter for Škoda Auto in India, as it ventures into new markets and attracts fresh customers. Earlier this year in February, the company expressed its aspirations to expand in India with the introduction of this SUV. In October, Škoda Auto India organized test drives of a camouflaged pre-production version of the Kylaq. Just a month later, the Kylaq celebrated its global premiere, and bookings will begin on December 2, 2024.

The Kylaq offers several standout features that make it a contender in its segment. These include segment-first six-way electric seats with ventilation for the driver and front passenger, Auto Climatronic for air conditioning, a spacious 446-liter boot, and a suite of modern infotainment options. The vehicle also boasts a 25.6 cm infotainment screen and a 20.3 cm Virtual Cockpit, along with a selection of tech-forward conveniences like wireless Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and an optional electric sunroof. Safety is also a priority, with the Kylaq offering over 25 active and passive safety features, including six airbags, Electronic Brake Distribution, and Traction and Stability Control.

Škoda’s Head of Design, Oliver Stefani, described the Kylaq as a prime example of the brand’s new Modern Solid design language, which combines strength, minimalism, and functionality. The Kylaq’s exterior sports a black grille with 3D ribs and Škoda’s characteristic “four eyes” headlights. With a length of 3,995 mm and a ground clearance of 189 mm, the Kylaq has a compact yet robust silhouette that’s sure to stand out on Indian roads. It is available in five distinct colors, including a new Olive Gold inspired by India’s lush monsoon landscapes.

Under the hood, the Kylaq features a 1.0 TSI engine which produces 85 hp of power and 178 Nm of torque, paired with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. With a top speed of 188 km/h and acceleration from 0-100 km/h in 10.5 seconds. Built on the same MQB-A0-IN platform as the Kushaq and Slavia, both of which have achieved a 5-star Global NCAP rating, the Kylaq is expeected to score the same.

Škoda has put the Kylaq through rigorous testing, covering over 800,000 kilometers on diverse terrains to ensure optimal performance and durability in varying conditions. Tests included exposure to high temperatures, monsoon rains, and vehicle vibration assessments to confirm a quiet, stable ride on any road.

Manufactured at Škoda’s eco-friendly Chakan plant, the Kylaq reflects Škoda’s commitment to sustainability. The facility, which generates 30% of its energy from solar power, aims to reach 75% by 2026. With Zero Waste to Landfill and Zero Liquid Discharge certifications, and more than 660,000 trees planted, Škoda is also incorporating sustainable materials in the Kylaq, such as bamboo-fiber-infused dashboard finishes.

Škoda Auto aims to significantly increase its market share in India, with a target of 100,000 sales annually by 2026. Petr Janeba, Škoda’s Brand Director in India, highlights that the Kylaq is designed to drive this growth, bringing European technology to Indian consumers at an accessible price point. With its feature-rich design, innovative safety measures, and sustainable production, the Kylaq is set to become a key player in India’s competitive compact SUV market.

As the third model in Škoda’s “Made in India for India” lineup, following the Kushaq and Slavia, the Kylaq represents a strategic move to capture a larger share of India’s expanding SUV market. With Škoda’s Modern Solid design, robust engineering, and high localization, the Kylaq promises to attract new customers and expand the brand’s presence in India.
